There doesn’t seem to be anything out there!
I set a pretty tough criteria.
- Made from: organic cotton (ideally long-staple that is even stronger and softer), hemp or Tencel fibres. These are all strong, breathable, and age well.
- Reinforced seams, high quality thread, strong collar and hems. I wanted details in the product description.
- Pre-shrunk fabric. So it won’t shrink in the wash.
Nothing seemed to match it!
Comfort Colours, Bronson MFG, Gettees, Uniqulo, Lululemon, American Giant, Sunspel, Barrows & Hair, Rapanui
That’s a long list of names — and most failed to meet the full criteria. Except a few.
Bronson MFG Loopwheel had a thick 10.5 oz cotton. I thought it would be pretty strong! It was heavyweight, ideal for durability. But it wasn’t organic.
Comfort Colours wasn’t organic either.
Lululemon lacked details about the product quality. So it did Uniqlo.
Then I found Gettees.
Gettees boasted reinforced stitching. They use Supima cotton, which is top quality. Very soft and strong. Though, not organic, the fact that Supima is long-fibre meant it was equivalent in strength to organic. So, we were on to something here!
And then another…
American Giant slub t-shirt was said to wear well, wash beautifully, and resists pilling over time. Long-staple cotton gives it softness and strength, resisting tears and thinning.
Finally, a UK contender…
Sunspel is made from extra-long staple Supima cotton. So very strong and soft! They mention reinforced seams and strong collar & hemline. ChatGPT confirmed they are “effectively pre-shrunk” too so the wash won’t shrink them! Only downside is the price tag of £95.
The winner had to be Sunspel, being as good as Gettees and American Giant, but easier to buy here in the UK.
